Sea Salt Factory
Porthkerris, The Lizard, Cornwall
This building was designed in two phases for a new company producing culinary sea salt which uses an innovative process. After a long search, the disused quarry at Porthkerris was identified as the ideal site, even though a number of difficult planning issues had to be resolved. The completed first phase houses the production plant, and the second phase provides offices. The building is designed to blend with the quarry face, using a timber frame, clad with fibre cement sheeting. These materials were selected because of their low embodied energy.
